Honda is recalling 98,892 2016-2026 vehicles, including the Accord, Civic, Odyssey, and Mdx, because the front passenger seat weight sensor can crack and short circuit. What's wrong?
The front passenger seat weight sensor in these 2016-2026 Honda vehicles is part of the occupant classification system. It reads weight on the passenger seat and sends that information to the SRS air bag system, so the vehicle knows how to manage the passenger air bag during a crash.
The problem is inside the sensor's printed circuit board, the flat electrical board that carries signals through the sensor. A changed base material in that board puts extra strain on a capacitor, a small electrical part that helps control the circuit. Exposure to humidity can make the capacitor crack and short internally, which can confuse the air bag system and lead to unintended air bag deployment during a crash.
Owners can see the SRS warning light turn on. The passenger airbag indicator can also stay off when the system is not reading the seat correctly.
