What's wrong?
The rear safety belt retractor is the spool-and-locking unit behind the rear seat belt in these 2026 MINI vehicles: Countryman S ALL4, X2, X1, 228I Xdrive Gran Coupe, 228I Gran Coupe, and M235I Xdrive Gran Coupe. Under normal use, it lets the belt pull out smoothly, retracts the webbing after use, and locks the belt during a hard stop or crash so the passenger is held in place.
On affected vehicles, a housing pin inside the left or right rear retractor was damaged during supplier production after a maintenance action. That pin is part of the structure that lets the retractor lock as designed. If the pin is damaged, the rear retractor does not lock the seat belt as intended, which means the seat belt assembly does not meet the required safety standard.
There is no warning sign before failure. The belt can look normal, pull out normally, and retract normally even when the locking function is not working as intended.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a MINI technician replaces the rear left, right, or both seat belt assemblies covered by the recall. The work is free, including parts and labor. The repair addresses the rear seat belt retractor housing pin condition that can keep the retractor from locking the belt as intended. Out of pocket repairs already paid are handled through the New Vehicle Limited Warranty program, not through a separate reimbursement program. Ask the MINI service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
