Recall 25V631 covers 655 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 New Flyer XE35, XE40, and XE60 buses for battery short circuits. Park outside, charge below 75%. Free battery replacement is phased.
A short circuit in the high voltage battery increases the risk of a fire. Park the bus outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete, and avoid charging above 75 percent. If a temperature warning appears or smoke is visible, keep the bus parked and call New Flyer service. Repair will be free at any franchised New Flyer dealer once New Flyer opens it.

What's wrong?
The HV battery is the large high voltage battery pack that stores energy for the electric propulsion system. On 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 New Flyer XE35, XE60, and XE40 buses in this recall, the pack uses Freudenberg Gen 3 HE battery modules. Those modules supply power to move the bus and are also charged when the bus is connected to charging equipment.
The problem is inside the battery cells. When the battery charges to near or full capacity, a cell fault or short circuit can develop within a module. New Flyer has not identified the precise cause of the short circuit. The defect is tied to buses equipped with the Freudenberg Gen 3 HE batteries, and the remedy parts will come from a different supplier.
If the bus is powered on, the driver display shows temperature warnings. If the bus is off, visible smoke from the affected battery is the warning sign to watch for.
