What's wrong?
On 2011-2025 Altec Aerial Device, Digger Derrick, Service Body, and Aerial Devices vehicles, the cable entry step uses a wire rope assembly to hold the step to the vehicle structure. That step is meant to give an operator a stable foothold when entering or working around the body. The wire rope is secured by a crimped tube, which is a compressed metal sleeve that grips the cable.
On affected vehicles, the crimp diameter does not meet Altec's specification. If the crimp is too loose, the cable can pull out of the crimped tube instead of staying locked in place. Once that happens, the cable entry step can detach from the vehicle.
There is no warning sign before failure. An owner or operator should not count on seeing movement, noise, or looseness before the step separates.
