What's wrong?
The right rear brake hose on affected 2015-2018 Edge and Mkx vehicles is a flexible line that carries brake fluid to the rear brake circuit as the suspension moves. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure travels through this hose so the rear brakes can help slow the vehicle. The hose has to bend with the wheel and suspension without splitting or leaking.
On these vehicles, the rear brake jounce hose can rupture and leak brake fluid. Ford has not fully determined the root cause, but it reported fewer repairs after changing the hose's inner and outer braid material from Polyvinyl Alcohol to Polyethylene Terephthalate. If the hose leaks, fluid pressure in that part of the brake system drops, which changes pedal feel and reduces braking performance.
The warning signs are a brake pedal that feels different or travels farther than normal. The red brake fluid warning light will also illuminate when the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir reaches the specified level.

What's the safety risk?
A brake fluid leak can lengthen stopping distance and increase the risk of a crash. Watch for a change in brake pedal feel or travel, and for the red brake fluid warning light. If either appears, pull over where safe and call a Ford dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised Ford dealer once available.
