What's wrong?

The B-pillar trim applique on a 2016-2017 Ford Explorer is the black exterior trim piece on the front door near the pillar between the front and rear door openings. It helps cover and finish the door edge, and it is supposed to stay bonded to the sheet metal as the vehicle moves through wind, vibration, heat, and door use.

On affected Explorers, that trim piece was not bonded firmly enough during assembly. Ford traced the problem to incomplete adhesive contact, added outward pressure from a foam piece on the back of the applique, and inconsistent hand-roller use during installation. Over time, the adhesive bond can loosen until the applique separates from the top of the front door and detaches while driving.

Owners can see the trim lifting or separating near the top of the front doors when getting in or out. Wind noise or rattling while driving is another warning sign.

What's the safety risk?

A loose B-pillar trim applique can detach while driving and become a road hazard, which increases crash risk. If you see trim lifting at the top of a front door, or hear new wind noise or rattling, drive cautiously and schedule service soon. Repair will be free at any franchised Ford dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2016-2017 Ford Explorer is included in this recall.
  2. Wait for Ford's second owner notice before scheduling the final dealer repair; Ford says the remedy is still under development.
  3. Call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 with questions and reference recall number 25V347.
  4. Watch for driver or front passenger B-Pillar door trim that detaches while driving, and contact a franchised Ford dealer if it happens.
  5. Keep detached trim out of the roadway and avoid driving with detached trim until a Ford dealer gives repair guidance.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, Ford has not released the final repair procedure yet. Interim owner letters were mailed June 5, 2025. A second notice is expected in November 2026 after Ford finishes the final remedy. The final dealer repair will be free once available. Until then, contact a Ford dealer or Ford customer service with recall 25S53 so they can note your vehicle and explain the next notice. Ford uses its standard reimbursement plan for owners who already paid for a related repair before the recall notice. Keep receipts and repair documentation, then ask Ford customer service or the dealer service desk how to submit them.
