Volvo is recalling 102 2022-2025 Vn and Vnl (4) trucks because improperly tightened idler gear bracket fasteners can let the idler gear detach from the engine. A detached idler gear can damage the engine, stall the truck, and increase the risk of a crash or injury; Volvo dealers will complete the repair free of charge.

What's wrong?
The turbocompound unit on 2022-2025 Volvo Vnl (4) and Vn trucks is part of the diesel engine system. It recovers energy from the exhaust stream and sends that power back through engine gearing. The idler gear bracket holds one of those gears in position so the gear train stays aligned while the engine runs.
On affected trucks, the idler gear bracket fasteners were not tightened to the required torque, or the torque records were missing. The root problem was weak control of the manufacturing torque process and record keeping. If the bracket loosens, the idler gear can detach inside the engine, causing engine failure and loss of motive power.
Volvo lists an engine indicator lamp and rough running before the truck loses motive power. If the truck starts running rough or the engine light comes on, treat that as the warning sign for this defect and contact a Volvo dealer.
