What's wrong?
The intermediate steering shaft in affected Brightdrop Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 vehicles links the steering wheel to the steering gear. When you turn the wheel, that shaft carries the motion down to the steering knuckle area so the front wheels respond. A small alignment feature on the shaft keeps the pieces positioned correctly during assembly.
In this recall, that alignment feature was forced out of position while the vehicle was built. Once pushed down into the base of the shaft, it can jam the steering knuckle instead of letting the shaft rotate freely. GM traced the issue to vehicles that needed an offline shaft connection after assembly, where the shaft connection was completed without the proper repair procedure.
There is no warning sign before failure. The steering can temporarily lock up without a dashboard light, noise, or other clear signal beforehand.
