What's wrong?
The air brake relay valve on 2023-2025 Volvo Vnr (4) and Vnl (4) trucks is part of the compressed-air brake control system. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the system sends air pressure through pneumatic lines so the brakes apply at the wheels and at trailer connections. The relay valve helps move that air signal quickly enough for proper brake timing.
On affected trucks, the issue is not normal wear. Volvo identified trucks built with both back-of-cab and end-of-frame trailer pneumatic connections that left the factory without the correct compliant pneumatic circuit. With that setup, brake activation can take longer than the FMVSS 121 air-brake timing requirement allows. The updated circuit uses a Bendix relay valve to bring brake actuation timing back into compliance.
There is no warning sign before failure. The driver is not expected to see a dashboard alert or feel a clear advance symptom tied to this noncompliance.
