What's wrong?
The step tread is the flat surface you step on when moving between levels inside a 2019-2024 Grand Design Solitude fifth wheel trailer. It is supposed to carry foot weight across the full tread, with the riser supporting the edge beneath it. On these trailers, the recalled tread is laminated hardwood, meaning separate wood layers are bonded together to form the step.
The problem is where that laminated joint lands. If the joint lines up with the step riser, the joint area lacks support underneath. When weight is applied, the tread can split at that joint and break instead of staying solid. Grand Design says the replacement components use composite material, while the recalled parts use laminated hardwood.
Owners can notice separation at the lamination joint on the step tread before it fails. The tread texture can hide that separation, so there is not always a visible warning sign before failure.
Who's affected?
The affected part appears under both body-structure and flooring component categories for the same step-tread issue.

What's the safety risk?
A step tread that separates or breaks can cause someone using the step to fall, increasing the risk of injury. Inspect the step before use, and treat visible separation at the lamination joint as a reason to stop using that step and call the dealer. There is not always a warning sign before failure. Repair will be free at any franchised Grand Design dealer once available.
