What's wrong?
The power transfer unit, or PTU, on the 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokee is part of the drivetrain. It helps route power from the transmission to the wheels through the differential, the gear assembly that lets the wheels turn at the right speeds. The PTU has to stay mechanically connected for the vehicle to move and for park to hold correctly.
The issue is an input shaft snap ring inside the two-speed PTU that was not seated correctly during assembly. A snap ring is a small retaining ring that holds a shaft in position. If it shifts or fails to hold the shaft, the PTU can become damaged and disconnect the transmission from the differential. That can cause loss of drive power, loss of park function, or both.
Owners can notice a Service 4WD message, unusual noise, vibration, or a change in how the Cherokee drives. Those signs point to the PTU beginning to act differently before the drivetrain connection fails.
Who's affected?
Covers three Cherokee model years with the same power transfer unit assembly.
| 2017 Jeep Cherokee | powertrain |
|---|---|
| 2018 Jeep Cherokee | powertrain |
| 2019 Jeep Cherokee | powertrain |
| Units affected | 63,130 |
The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific SUV is included.
What's the safety risk?
Loss of drive power raises crash risk, and loss of park function can let the vehicle roll away, raising crash or injury risk. Watch for a Service 4WD message, noise, vibration, or a change in drive quality. Schedule service soon if your VIN is included. Repair will be free at any franchised Jeep dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokee is included in this recall.
- Watch for Jeep's owner letter, mailed beginning February 19, 2026, and keep it with your records.
- Ask a franchised Jeep dealer when the free drivetrain control module update, PTU software update, and PTU repair opens; this repair addresses loss of drive power and loss of park function.
- Reference recall number 25V011 when you call the dealer or Jeep customer service.
- Avoid relying on Park alone until the repair is complete. Use the parking brake each time you park.
What happens at the repair
Because the final remedy is still under development, do not assume the dealer can complete the repair today. Once Jeep opens the repair, a Jeep technician will update the drivetrain control module and PTU software, then replace the PTU if needed. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. FCA's general reimbursement plan covers eligible owner paid repairs completed before the recall notice. Bring documentation for related prior repairs and ask the service desk how to submit it under that plan.
