What's wrong?
Inside the Cummins X15 fuel pump, the pump tappet barrel is part of the high pressure fuel passage that helps the pump build and hold diesel fuel pressure for injection. On the affected 2025 trucks, that part is supposed to stay strong while the pump cycles under load and vibration.
The problem starts with how some barrels were made. Their metal surface was not finished to specification during heat treatment and shot peening, the process that hardens the surface against repeated stress. That left some parts with lower fatigue strength. During operation, the barrel can fracture, letting diesel fuel leak and dropping fuel pressure enough to stall the engine.
Drivers can notice reduced performance or a warning lamp after fuel pressure drops below the commanded value. People in or around the truck can also see or smell diesel fuel.
Who's affected?
Covers 9 truck models in the 2025 model year, all tied to the same fuel-pump tappet part.

What's the safety risk?
An engine stall increases the risk of a crash. Reduced performance, a warning lamp, or the smell of diesel fuel means fuel pressure is dropping or fuel is escaping. Pull over when safe and arrange service soon. Repair is free at any franchised Kenworth dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2025 Kenworth or Peterbilt truck is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Kenworth or Peterbilt dealer to schedule the free fuel-pump-barrel replacement that fixes the fuel leak and engine-stall risk.
- Bring the owner letter if you have it. If not, reference recall number 24V789 and PACCAR recall 24KWH or 24PBH when you call.
- Call Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888 with questions about the recall or dealer scheduling.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete. If the engine stalls or you smell fuel, pull over safely and contact the dealer before driving again.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Kenworth technician replaces the fuel pump barrels on the diesel engine. The replacement parts and labor are covered under the recall, so the owner does not pay for this repair. PACCAR used its general reimbursement plan on file, which gives owners a path to claim qualifying out-of-pocket repairs tied to this fuel pump barrel issue. If you already paid for a related repair, bring documentation and receipts to the service desk or contact Kenworth customer service.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 24V789?
Recall 24V789 covers 5,690 2025 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks equipped with Cummins X15 diesel engines. The fuel pump barrels can fracture and leak fuel, which can lead to an engine stall and increase crash risk. Dealers will replace the fuel pump barrels for free.
What should I do if my 2025 Kenworth W900, T680, C500, T800, W990, T880, Peterbilt 579, 567, or 589 is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific truck is included in recall 24V789. If it is, contact a franchised dealer for your truck brand to schedule fuel pump barrel replacement. Reference recall 24V789 and PACCAR recall number 24KWH or 24PBH when you call.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and PACCAR says dealers will replace the fuel pump barrels free of charge. Parts and labor are covered for included trucks.
What is the safety risk?
The safety risk is an engine stall. PACCAR reported that fractured fuel pump barrels can cause a fuel leak, and that leak can result in the engine stalling. An engine stall increases crash risk, so included trucks need the free dealer repair.
When were owners notified about recall 24V789?
