What's wrong?
The thermally activated pressure relief device on the 2019-2024 Hyundai Nexo is part of the hydrogen fuel storage system. It is designed to open under extreme heat and vent pressure from the hydrogen tank in a controlled way, which helps protect the tank when temperatures rise.
On affected Nexo vehicles, the original glass bulb-type device can fracture too early because of microcracks in the glass. If the bulb breaks during normal operation, hydrogen gas can discharge when it should stay sealed. That leak can create a fire risk while the vehicle is parked. Hyundai's remedy replaces the glass-type device with a new metal-type pressure relief device.
During the event, owners can hear a loud wind-rushing noise and see a white fog-like cloud near the rear of the vehicle. The fuel gauge can drop quickly, and the malfunction indicator lamp can illuminate in the cluster.
