What's wrong?
The Cummins X15 fuel pump on these 2025 49X, Cascadia, Xcm, and Xcp vehicles sends diesel fuel to the engine at the pressure the engine control system requests. The pump has internal barrels, metal sleeves inside the pump that help build and hold that pressure. When the pump holds pressure, the engine gets a steady fuel supply.
The problem is in how certain pump barrels were finished during manufacturing. The heat treatment process left an abnormal softer surface layer, and the shot peening step, a surface treatment meant to help metal resist cracking, did not fully protect the part. That leaves the barrel with lower fatigue strength. Over use, the barrel can fracture, diesel fuel can leak, and the engine can stall.
Before the failure, the driver can notice reduced performance or a warning lamp after fuel pressure drops below the requested value. People in or around the vehicle can also see or smell diesel fuel.
