What's wrong?
The brake master cylinder on the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Atlas turns brake pedal force into hydraulic pressure. When you press the pedal, the master cylinder pushes brake fluid through the brake lines so the calipers clamp the brake pads against the rotors. The brake fluid port inside the cylinder has to stay open for pressure to build and release correctly.
On affected vehicles, the master cylinder was assembled with the wrong secondary piston spring retainer. Volkswagen traced the problem to supplier manufacturing errors, where retainers from another automaker were mixed with Volkswagen parts. The incorrect retainer can block the brake fluid port, which interferes with normal fluid movement and reduces braking performance.
The driver can feel a soft or spongy brake pedal. A brake smell, reduced braking performance, or an illuminated brake warning light can also appear before the problem is repaired.
Who's affected?
Covers both 2024 Atlas body styles, with the same hydraulic brake system component listed for each.

What's the safety risk?
An obstructed brake fluid port can cause loss of brake function and increase the risk of a crash. Watch for a soft or spongy brake pedal, brake smell, weaker braking, or a brake warning light. If you notice any of these, stop driving and call the dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Volkswagen dealer.
