2023-2024 Cadillac Lyriq Recall 24V589: ABS Defect

Recall 24V589 affects 21,469 2023-2024 Cadillac Lyriq all-wheel-drive vehicles for unexpected ABS activation. Software update is free at any franchised Cadillac dealer.

Cadillac is recalling 21,469 2023-2024 Lyriq all-wheel drive vehicles under recall 24V589 because the anti-lock brake system can activate unexpectedly and release brake pressure in the service brake system. That loss of brake pressure can cause a loss of braking ability and raise crash risk; Cadillac dealers will complete the repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The 2023-2024 Cadillac Lyriq all-wheel drive uses ABS to help control braking when a wheel starts to slip. The electronic brake control module, or EBCM, is the computer that reads wheel movement and tells the brake system how much pressure to hold or release. Under normal braking, that software should release pressure only when it detects a real skid.

On affected Lyriq all-wheel drive vehicles, the EBCM software can falsely detect wheel slippage. GM traced the defect to software that lets the ABS continue commanding a release of brake pressure during a false ABS event on a dry road at speeds below 25 mph. That leaves the service brake system with less pressure than the driver requested.

There is no warning sign before failure. The problem happens through the brake-control software, so an owner is not given a dashboard signal or part noise that clearly points to the defect before the ABS event occurs.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific SUV is included.

What's the safety risk?

A release of brake pressure can cause a loss of braking ability and increase the risk of a crash. Schedule the free software update soon, and leave extra following distance until the repair is complete. Repair is free at any franchised Cadillac dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2023-2024 Cadillac Lyriq is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Cadillac dealer to schedule the free electronic brake control module software update that fixes the unexpected ABS activation and brake-pressure release.
  3. Ask whether your vehicle can receive the over-the-air update or needs a dealer visit.
  4. Bring the recall notice if Cadillac mailed one. If not, reference recall number 24V589 when you call.
  5. Drive cautiously until the software update is complete. Leave extra following distance and avoid hard braking when traffic allows.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Cadillac technician updates the electronic brake control module software if the vehicle has not already received the over the air update. The software update is free under the recall, whether it arrives remotely or is installed during a dealer visit. Repairs you already paid for are handled through the existing warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program, because the covered vehicles are still under warranty. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
