Land Rover is recalling 2,013 2023-2024 Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover Velar vehicles because the oil filter housing can crack and leak oil into the engine compartment. What's wrong?

The oil filter housing on these 2023-2024 Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover Velar vehicles holds the engine oil filter in place and seals pressurized oil inside the lubrication system. As the engine runs, oil passes through the filter to remove debris before it returns to moving engine parts. That housing has to stay sealed through heat, vibration, and pressure.

On affected vehicles, the housing was made with the wrong plastic specification. Over time, that plastic can crack. Once a crack opens, engine oil can leak from the housing and enter the engine compartment instead of staying inside the lubrication system. The issue is with the housing material, not with routine filter service.

There is no warning sign before failure. After a leak starts, warning signs include an oil smell, oil spots under the vehicle, smoke from oil contacting hot surfaces, or an oil-pressure warning if the engine loses enough oil.

What's the safety risk?

An oil leak near hot engine or exhaust components increases the risk of a fire. If your VIN is included, schedule the dealer repair soon and limit driving until the filter housing, oil filter, and o-rings are replaced. Repair is free at any franchised Land Rover dealer.
