What's wrong?
The motor-driven power steering assembly on the 2024 Kia Sportage uses an electric motor and control electronics to add steering assist when you turn the wheel. The power pack and circuit board help manage that assist, so normal steering input feels lighter at low speeds and more controlled while driving.
In affected Sportage vehicles, the printed circuit board in the steering assembly was built with contaminated flux, a manufacturing residue used during circuit-board soldering. That contamination can create an electrical short inside the board. When the board shorts, the electric steering assist stops working and the driver must steer without that added help.
The warning sign is illumination of the MDPS warning light. MDPS means motor-driven power steering, so that light is the system's way of telling you the electric steering assist has detected a fault.

What's the safety risk?
Loss of power steering assist makes the Sportage harder to steer and can increase the risk of a crash. If the MDPS warning light comes on, slow down, avoid sudden maneuvers, and arrange service soon. Repair is free at any franchised Kia dealer.
