What's wrong?
The Body Control Module on 2022-2024 Ford Maverick trucks is the electronic controller that manages many body functions, including exterior lighting. For the rear tail lights, it sends power through a circuit so the lamps stay lit when the headlights or position lights are on. Those rear position lights help other drivers see the truck from behind at night or in low light.
On affected Mavericks, the software limit inside the Body Control Module was set too low for the tail light circuit. The rear lamps use two position bulbs on one circuit, but the controller was calibrated for the current draw of one bulb. When the controller reads the normal draw as too high, it can shut off one or both rear tail lights. Ford reported that the brake lights and turn signals still work.
There is no warning sign before failure. An owner can drive without knowing one or both rear tail lights have gone dark unless another person sees it from outside the truck.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific pickup truck.
What's the safety risk?
Rear tail lights that stop illuminating make the Maverick harder for other drivers to see, increasing the risk of a crash. There is no warning sign before the lights fail. Schedule the BCM software update soon and check the tail lights before driving. Repair is free at any franchised Ford dealer.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Ford technician updates the Body Control Module software so it does not inadvertently turn off one or both rear tail lights. The software update is free under the recall, with parts and labor covered by Ford. Ford's standard reimbursement plan covers eligible owner-paid remedies completed before the recall notice. Ford lists June 3, 2024 as the reimbursement eligibility end date. Bring documentation of the paid repair to the service desk or contact Ford customer service to start the claim.
