What's wrong?

The heating system on the 2019 Micro Bird G5 Transit Bus uses a LIN gateway module, called the Webasto Cronus, to control the high voltage coolant heaters. Those heaters warm the HVAC system so the windshield defroster can clear frost and fog before the bus is driven. The defroster depends on the gateway module telling the heaters to start when the driver activates the system.

On the recalled bus, the gateway module has software version 1.2 or earlier. Under the recalled condition, that module can fail to start the heating system when it is turned on. If the heaters do not start, the windshield defroster does not work correctly before driving, which is why the vehicle fails the windshield defrosting and defogging standard. Micro Bird says the issue does not cause the heating system to stop while the bus is already in route.

There is no warning sign before failure. The practical sign is simple: when the system is activated, the heat needed to clear the windshield does not come on.

What's the safety risk?

An inoperative windshield defrosting system reduces the driver's ability to clear the glass, which limits visibility and increases the risk of a crash. If defrosting is not working, avoid trips in fog, rain, ice, or other conditions that need windshield clearing, and schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Micro Bird dealer.
