Tesla is recalling 6,557 2013, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S vehicles because a factory reset muted the Pedestrian Warning System sounds. With the warning sound muted, pedestrians have less notice of an approaching vehicle, increasing crash risk; Tesla will correct the issue free of charge.

What's wrong?
The Pedestrian Warning System on these Tesla vehicles is controlled by vehicle software. Its job is to make an outside warning sound so people near the vehicle can hear it, even though the electric drivetrain is quiet. That sound is part of the federal minimum sound requirement for hybrid and electric vehicles.
On affected Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S vehicles, the problem starts after a factory reset. Vehicles with an Intel Infotainment processor running software versions 2023.32 through 2023.44.30 saved the wrong gain value in the infotainment system cache. Gain is the volume setting. When the cache stores a muted value, the Pedestrian Warning System stays silent instead of playing the required sound.
If the condition is present, the Pedestrian Warning System will not emit any sound. That missing outside sound is what an owner or technician would notice before the problem is corrected.

What's the safety risk?
If the pedestrian warning sound is muted, pedestrians are less likely to notice the vehicle approaching, increasing the risk of a crash. If the PWS makes no sound, complete the recall update and use extra care around pedestrians. Repair is free at any franchised Tesla dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2013, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, or 2022 Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model X, or Model S is included in this recall.
- Contact Tesla service to confirm the free OTA software update is available for your vehicle.
- Install Tesla software update 2023.44.30.14, which restores Pedestrian Warning System sounds after a factory reset.
- Reference recall number 24V153 and Tesla recall SB-24-00-006 when you contact Tesla service.
- Use extra care around pedestrians until the update is installed, especially at low speeds where the warning sound matters.
What happens at the repair
Tesla fixes this recall through an over-the-air software update, release 2023.44.30.14, which restores the Pedestrian Warning System sounds after a factory reset. The update is free, and owner notification letters were mailed April 27, 2024. There is no dealer part replacement required for this campaign. Reimbursement is not offered because Tesla says there was no paid repair tied to the underlying condition and owners received the remedy free of charge through the OTA software release. If the update is not showing on the vehicle, contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 and reference SB-24-00-006.
