What's wrong?
The starter solenoid on 2015-2019 Hyundai Genesis, G80, G90, and G70 vehicles is the electrical switch that sends power to the starter when the engine starts. It uses a magnetic switch inside the starter assembly to move high current only when startup is needed. When it works normally, it helps crank the engine and then stops feeding the starter once the engine is running.
In affected vehicles, water can enter the starter solenoid. That moisture can create an electrical short inside the solenoid, leaving current where it does not belong. Hyundai's remedy relay changes the power path so the starter solenoid receives power during vehicle startup only, not continuously. Without that change, the short can lead to an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is parked or driving.
Warning signs include smoke from the engine compartment, a burning or melting odor, and difficulty starting the engine. The engine also can fail to start.
