Recall 24V060 covers 570,434 2020-2024 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 trucks for tailgate switch water intrusion. Repair is free at any franchised GMC dealer.
GMC is recalling 570,434 2020-2024 Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Silverado 2500, and Silverado 3500 trucks equipped with power-unlatching tailgates because water can short the electronic gate-release switch. An unlatched tailgate can open while driving, spill unsecured cargo into traffic, and increase crash risk; GMC dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?
The tailgate release switch on affected 2020-2024 GMC Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Silverado 2500, and Silverado 3500 trucks is the exterior touchpad that tells the body control module to unlock and release the tailgate. On trucks with the manual gate with power lock and release, that switch lets the driver open the tailgate electronically instead of using a purely mechanical handle.
The problem is water intrusion at the switch. The tailgate design lets water reach an unsealed release switch, and moisture can short the circuit. When that happens, the body control module can receive a release signal even though no one pressed the touchpad. The tailgate can unlatch while the truck is in park.
The warning sign is straightforward: the tailgate has opened when you did not command it. If that happens, treat the switch and latch system as suspect and keep cargo secured until the dealer repair is complete.

What's the safety risk?
The risk is an unlatched tailgate opening while driving. Unsecured cargo can fall out, create a road hazard, and increase crash risk. Before driving, confirm the tailgate is fully closed and latched, and watch for any sign that it has opened unexpectedly. Schedule the switch replacement soon. Repair is free at any franchised GMC dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2020-2024 GMC Sierra 3500, Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, or Sierra 2500 is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised GMC dealer to schedule the free exterior touchpad switch replacement that fixes the water-intrusion short in the tailgate release switch.
- Bring the recall notice if GMC has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 24V060 when you call.
- Check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving until the repair is complete.
- Secure cargo inside the bed and keep loose cargo away from the tailgate until the dealer repair is finished.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a GMC technician replaces the exterior touchpad switch assemblies for the power-unlatching tailgate. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. Until the switch assembly has been replaced, check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. GM's standard reimbursement plan covers qualifying repairs owners already paid for before the recall notice. Ask the service desk how to submit repair documentation under the plan GM filed on May 12, 2023.
