Recall 24V056 affects 337 2021-2024 New Flyer XE35, XE60, XHE40, and XE40 buses for drain-valve defects. Repair is free at any franchised New Flyer dealer.
New Flyer is recalling 337 2021-2024 XE35, XE40, XE60, and XHE40 buses because one or more battery-pack drain valves can fail to activate, allowing liquid to collect inside the battery pack enclosure. Liquid buildup inside the enclosure can create an electrical short and increase fire risk, and the dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?
The ESS drain valve assembly on these New Flyer XE35, XE60, XHE40, and XE40 buses sits in the traction battery enclosure. ESS means energy storage system, the high-voltage battery pack that powers the bus. The drain valve is supposed to open when liquid is present, so coolant or other liquid does not stay inside the battery pack enclosure.
On recalled buses, the valve design included a rubber washer added to reduce nuisance activation in high humidity and temperature. That washer interferes with the bobbin, the internal piece that reacts to liquid exposure and helps trigger the valve. When the bobbin is slowed, the drain valve takes too long to activate, leaving liquid to collect in the enclosure instead of draining out.
Operators should watch for a low coolant warning on the instrument cluster or at the service or charging area. That warning points to low coolant in the Battery Thermal Management System, which manages battery temperature. If the warning appears, locate the cause before adding coolant.
Who's affected?
Spans the XE35, XE60, XE40, and XHE40 buses across the 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 model years, all tied to the high-voltage traction battery coolant drain valve assembly.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific bus is included.
What's the safety risk?
Liquid inside the battery pack enclosure can cause an electrical short and increase fire risk. A low-coolant warning on the instrument cluster or at the service or charging area is the key warning sign. If that appears, locate the cause before adding coolant. Repair will be free at any franchised New Flyer dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2021-2024 New Flyer XE35, XE60, XHE40, or XE40 is included in this recall.
- Use the New Flyer owner letter mailed March 14, 2024, or call New Flyer customer service at 1-204-224-6706 if the letter is missing.
- Ask New Flyer how to complete the free rubber-washer removal that lets the drain valves activate so liquid does not collect in the battery pack enclosure.
- Reference recall number 24V056 and New Flyer recall R24-02 when you call.
- Confirm whether your bus also needs the separate remedy for recall 23V-083 before returning it to service.
What happens at the repair
Once New Flyer opens the dealer repair, a New Flyer technician will remove the rubber washer from each affected drain valve, free of charge. Certain buses are also included in recall 23V-083, so the service desk should confirm whether both remedies apply to the same VIN and complete both if needed. Prior drain valve work is handled through New Flyer's warranty system, not through a separate reimbursement program. Ask the service desk how the normal warranty filing process applies if you have paperwork for a drain valve replacement already completed.
