What's wrong?
The fuel pump in a 2022-2023 Mercedes-Benz Metris moves gasoline from the tank to the engine at the pressure the engine needs. Inside the fuel delivery module, the impeller spins to move that fuel. When the pump works correctly, the engine gets a steady fuel supply during starting, idling, and driving.
On affected Metris vans, a sub-supplier production issue left certain fuel pump impellers outside the required material specification. Those impellers do not have the intended durability properties. As the pump wears, it can switch off instead of continuing to deliver fuel. When that happens, the engine loses fuel supply and the van loses drive power.
Before the fuel pump switches off, the driver can see a malfunction warning in the instrument cluster. The engine can also run rough. Treat those signs as fuel-system symptoms and tell the Mercedes-Benz dealer about them when arranging the free recall repair.
Who's affected?
Both model years use the same fuel-pump O-ring part, so the VIN check is the way to separate included vans from other Metris vans.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific van is included.
What's the safety risk?
A fuel pump shutdown can cause loss of drive power, which increases the risk of a crash. Before shutdown, the instrument cluster can show a warning message and the engine can run rough. If either happens, pull over when safe and arrange dealer service. Repair is free at any franchised Mercedes-Benz dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2022-2023 Mercedes-Benz Metris is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Mercedes-Benz dealer to schedule the free fuel-pump replacement that fixes the shutdown risk behind the loss of drive power.
- Bring the recall notice if Mercedes-Benz mailed one. If not, reference recall number 23V881 when you call.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete. If the van loses drive power, move out of traffic and call for roadside assistance.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Mercedes-Benz technician replaces the fuel pump covered by recall 23V881. Parts and labor are free under the recall. Out-of-pocket repairs already paid are handled through the existing new vehicle warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program, because the involved Metris vehicles remain under warranty. If you have prior repair paperwork for this fuel pump issue, ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies.
