Chevrolet is recalling 20,712 2014 Cruze and Verano vehicles under recall 23V870 because the left or right roof-rail air bag inflator can rupture at the weld joint. A ruptured inflator can partially inflate the air bag and send sharp metal fragments into or out of the vehicle, increasing injury risk; Chevrolet dealers will complete the repair free of charge.

What's wrong?
The roof-rail airbag in the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze and Verano sits along the upper edge of the cabin near the roof. In a side crash or rollover, its inflator fills the airbag so the bag can help protect occupants near the windows. The inflator has to hold pressure at its welded joint when it fires.
On affected vehicles, the inflator chamber came from a suspect production lot with contamination inside the chamber. That contamination leads to corrosion, and corrosion can create cracking near the weld joint. If the inflator activates during a crash, the weakened weld joint can rupture instead of holding pressure.
There is no warning sign before failure. The problem is inside the sealed inflator chamber, so an owner would not notice it during normal driving.
Who's affected?
Covers Cruze and Verano models from the same model year, both tied to the same roof rail side air bag.

What's the safety risk?
An inflator rupture can leave the side rear air bag only partly inflated and send sharp metal fragments into or out of the vehicle, increasing injury risk. If your VIN is included, schedule the recall repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Chevrolet dealer.
