What's wrong?
The crankshaft position sensor on these 2023-2024 Indian motorcycles tells the engine computer where the crankshaft is as the engine turns. The computer uses that signal to time fuel and spark, so the engine keeps running cleanly and responds when the rider opens the throttle.
On affected Chieftain, Roadmaster, and Springfield models, the sensor wire was routed too close to the exhaust head pipe. Heat from the pipe can melt the wire insulation. Once the wire is damaged, the sensor signal can be interrupted, and the engine can stall during operation.
There is no warning sign before failure. Indian's review found smoke from the sensor wire in warranty claims, but an owner should not count on seeing or smelling smoke before the motorcycle stalls.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, an Indian technician inspects how the crankshaft position sensor is routed. If the sensor wiring is out of position, the technician reroutes it or replaces the crankshaft position sensor as needed. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. If you paid to replace or service the motorcycle for this condition before the recall notice, Indian's general recall reimbursement plan covers eligible documented expenses. Bring the repair invoice and payment paperwork to the dealer or contact Indian customer service to start the claim.
