What's wrong?
The left rear axle shaft on affected 2023 Ford F-350 Sd and F-250 Sd trucks is the metal shaft that sends engine power from the rear axle assembly to the left rear wheel. On trucks with single rear wheels and a 10.5-inch rear axle, that shaft also has to handle twisting force each time the truck starts, climbs, tows, or accelerates.
Ford traced the problem to an incorrect setting in one supplier heat-treatment machine. Heat treatment hardens the steel so it can carry torque without twisting or cracking. The wrong setting left part of the left rear axle shaft below Ford's design specification for torsional strength and case depth. Under load, the shaft can fracture near the flange, separating the power path to that wheel.
The warning signs are rear axle noise or loss of motive power in two-wheel drive operation. If the truck has four-wheel drive, shifting into 4WD can restore mobility after the rear shaft breaks, but the axle still needs the recall repair.
Who's affected?
Covers the F-250 Sd and F-350 Sd, both using the same left rear axle shaft for single rear wheel builds.

What's the safety risk?
A broken rear axle shaft can cause loss of drive power or rollaway after shifting to park, increasing crash risk. Rear axle noise or lost motive power in two-wheel drive operation is a warning sign. Schedule the inspection soon, and use the parking brake until the dealer checks it. Repair is free at any franchised Ford dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2023 Ford F-350 Sd or F-250 Sd is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Ford dealer to schedule the free repair.
- Ask the dealer to inspect the left rear axle shaft date code and replace the axle shaft if needed, which addresses the heat-treated shaft that can break and cause loss of drive power or rollaway in park.
- Bring the recall notice if Ford mailed one. If not, reference recall number 23V595 when you call.
- Drive cautiously until the inspection is complete, and stop using the truck if it loses drive power or does not stay parked.
What happens at the repair
The recall repair is available at a Ford dealer now. A Ford technician inspects the date code on the left rear axle shaft and replaces the axle shaft if the date code shows it is covered by the recall. Parts and labor are free. If you already paid out of pocket for this repair before the owner notice, Ford's standard reimbursement plan covers eligible documented expenses, with eligibility ending January 31, 2024. Bring your repair paperwork to the service desk so the dealer can explain the claim process.
