What's wrong?
The instrument panel top pad in the 2022-2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV is the cover across the front dashboard. On the passenger side, that cover is designed with a hidden scored line underneath it. During a crash, the passenger-side air bag pushes through that scored area so the bag opens in the correct direction.
On affected Bolt EV vehicles, the underside of the panel cover was not perforated, or scored, the way it should have been. GM traced the problem to unfinished cover pads that were mixed with finished material at a supplier and then built into complete instrument panels. Without the proper scoring, the dashboard cover does not open along the intended path when the passenger-side air bag deploys.
There is no warning sign before failure. The issue is inside the dashboard cover, so an owner will not see a light, sound, or drivability symptom before a crash reveals the problem.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Chevrolet technician replaces the instrument panel with a panel that has the required underside perforation for passenger side air bag deployment. The recall repair is free, and parts and labor are covered. Out of pocket repairs already paid are handled through the existing warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program, because all covered vehicles are under warranty.
