What's wrong?
On 2014-2020 Ram 1500 and Grand Cherokee vehicles with 3.0L Diesel engines, the crankshaft tone wheel is part of the engine timing system. It spins with the crankshaft, and its magnetic surface gives the crankshaft position sensor a signal the engine computer uses to time fuel injector pulses and camshaft timing. Without that clean signal, the computer loses track of where the engine is in its rotation.
In this recall, the magnetic signal material separates from the body of the tone wheel. Once that signal breaks up or disappears, the crankshaft position sensor cannot give the engine computer reliable timing information. The engine then loses synchronization for fuel and camshaft timing, which can result in an engine stall.
There is no warning sign before failure. The recall remedy is a software flash that turns on a malfunction indicator light if the tone wheel fails and keeps the engine from stalling.

What's the safety risk?
An engine stall can leave the vehicle without steady propulsion and increase the risk of a crash, especially in traffic. There is no warning sign before failure, so treat any stall or sudden loss of power as a reason to pull over safely and contact a Ram dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Ram dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2014-2020 Ram 1500 or Jeep Grand Cherokee is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Ram dealer to schedule the free powertrain control module software update that helps maintain propulsion if the crankshaft sensor tone wheel delaminates.
- Bring the recall notice if you have one, and reference recall number 23V411 and FCA US recall 66A when you call.
- Drive cautiously until the software update is complete. If the engine stalls, steer to a safe location and contact the dealer before driving again.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Ram technician updates the powertrain control module software so the engine keeps vehicle propulsion if the crankshaft position sensor tone wheel delaminates. The software update and labor are free under the recall. FCA US has a reimbursement process for owners who already paid for a related repair before the recall notice. Send the original receipt or other proof of payment to FCA US as requested in the owner letter so the expense can be reviewed.
