What's wrong?

The furnace LP gas line in a 2023 Forest River Salem or Wildwood travel trailer carries fuel to the furnace so it can heat the trailer. A brass 90 degree fitting connects to the furnace's LPG steel pipe. That threaded connection needs sealant so gas stays inside the line when the system is in use.

On the recalled trailers, the fitting was built without thread sealant because of a manufacturing error. Without that sealant, the threads do not have the intended barrier around the joint. LP gas can escape at the fitting instead of staying in the pipe, which creates a gas leak near the furnace system.

Owners can notice the smell of LP Gas before the fitting is repaired. The LP Gas alarm can also sound and warn people inside the trailer that gas is present.

Who's affected?

Covers Salem and Wildwood trailers from the same model year, with the furnace as the shared component.

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific trailer is included.

What's the safety risk?

Missing thread sealant can let propane gas leak from the brass elbow, increasing fire risk. If you smell LP gas or the LP gas alarm sounds, stop using propane appliances, move away from the trailer, and call the dealer before using the system again. Repair is free at any franchised Forest River dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2023 Forest River Salem or Wildwood travel trailer is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Forest River dealer to schedule the free furnace propane-fitting inspection.
  3. Schedule the brass-fitting thread-sealant repair that fixes the propane leak path at the furnace pipe.
  4. Tell the dealer Forest River says affected trailers were in dealer inventory, so an owner letter was not mailed. Reference recall number 23V359 when you call.
  5. Avoid using the furnace or propane system until the brass fitting has been inspected and sealed.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Forest River technician inspects the brass elbow connected to the furnace pipe and applies thread sealant where the fitting needs it. The inspection and sealant work are free under the recall. Even if the trailer is still in dealer inventory, the recall needs to be inspected or completed before delivery. If you already paid for a repair within the scope of this defect, send the service invoice to Forest River's Salem or Wildwood warranty manager to request reimbursement.
