Recall 23V348 affects 47 2023 Western Star 57X trucks for turn-signal indicator software. Repair will be free at any franchised Western Star dealer once available.
Western Star is recalling 47 2023 57X trucks because the interior turn signals can flash too quickly and stop giving the driver the expected bulb-out alert. A burned-out exterior turn signal will not illuminate, so other drivers do not get a clear turn warning, which raises crash risk; the Western Star dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?
The turn signal telltale on the 2023 Western Star 57X is the indicator light in the instrument cluster that flashes when the driver uses a turn signal. It is supposed to flash at the same rate as the exterior turn signal lamps, so the driver sees a clear match between the dashboard indicator and the lights outside the truck.
On affected trucks, the headlamp software parameter is set incorrectly. That setting controls how the instrument cluster reads and displays turn signal operation. The dashboard telltale flashes faster than the exterior turn signal lamps, which does not meet FMVSS 108. Because the telltale already flashes too fast, it does not give a clear change in flash rate when an exterior turn signal bulb burns out.
The warning sign is visible in the cab. The turn signal telltale lamps on the instrument cluster flash faster than normal operation, even when the exterior turn signals are not flashing at that same faster rate.
Who's affected?
The instrument panel and turn signal items trace to the same headlamp software parameter, part 81Z-006.

What's the safety risk?
When an exterior turn signal stops working, other drivers do not get a clear signal before the truck turns, increasing the risk of a crash. A faster flashing turn signal indicator on the instrument cluster is the warning sign. Schedule the software update soon. Repair will be free at any franchised Western Star dealer once available.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Western Star technician will update the turn signal indicator software so the interior indicator timing matches the exterior turn signal behavior. Because the remedy is still listed as under development, the final dealer repair should be treated as not open yet. The dealer repair will be free once available. If you already paid for this repair, ask an authorized Western Star dealer to start the reimbursement request and bring the paperwork required by the owner letter.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 23V348?
Recall 23V348 covers 47 2023 Western Star 57X vehicles with interior turn signals that flash too quickly and fail to match the exterior turn signal rate. If an exterior turn signal bulb burns out, the driver does not get the proper alert. Western Star dealers will update the turn signal indicator software for free.
What should I do if my 2023 Western Star 57X is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific truck is included in recall 23V348. If it is, contact a franchised Western Star dealer to schedule the turn signal indicator software update. Reference NHTSA recall 23V348000 or DTNA recall FL975 when you call.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Western Star dealers will update the turn signal indicator software free of charge. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost at a franchised dealer, regardless of where the truck was purchased.
What is the safety risk?
The risk is that a nonfunctioning exterior turn signal does not notify other drivers that the truck is turning, increasing the risk of a crash. The dealer software update fixes the indicator behavior so the driver gets the proper turn signal bulb alert.
When were owners notified about this recall?
Owner notification letters were mailed June 13, 2023. If you bought the truck used or never received a letter, check your VIN to confirm whether your specific 2023 Western Star 57X is included, then call a franchised Western Star dealer for the free software update.
