What's wrong?
The steering gear on 2022-2023 Ford Bronco vehicles turns your steering-wheel input into movement at the front wheels. Inside the gear, a ball nut assembly helps the mechanism move smoothly with power steering assist, so the wheel turns with normal effort and the tires respond predictably.
In the affected steering gears, a loose gauge key in supplier assembly tooling contacted and damaged the ball nut retainer during assembly. The retainer is the piece that keeps small internal balls in place inside the ball nut assembly. If that retainer is cracked or broken, the balls can shift out of position and wedge inside the gear. That internal damage can make the Bronco harder to steer or cause the steering wheel to lock up.
A driver can notice grinding or other steering noise before the failure becomes worse. Increased steering effort is also a warning sign, especially if the wheel suddenly feels heavier than normal.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific SUV is included.
What's the safety risk?
A steering wheel that locks up can cause a complete loss of steering control and increase crash risk. Noise or heavier steering effort is the warning sign. If that happens, stop using the Bronco and call a Ford dealer for repair instructions. Repair is free at any franchised Ford dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2022-2023 Ford Bronco is included in this recall.
- Do not drive the vehicle until the steering-gear replacement is complete.
- Arrange a tow if the Bronco has to be moved to the dealer; do not drive it there yourself.
- Contact a franchised Ford dealer to schedule the free steering-gear replacement that fixes the damaged gear linked to steering lock-up.
- Bring the owner notice if you have it. If not, reference recall number 23V155 and Ford recall 23S09 when you call.
