2023-2024 Newell P50 Recall 23V147: Brake Light Switch

Recall 23V147 affects 28 2023-2024 Newell P50 coaches because brake lights can fail unless the pedal is fully depressed. Newell rewires the switch free.

Newell is recalling 28 2023-2024 P50 motor coaches because the brake lights fail to illuminate unless the brake pedal is fully depressed. This can leave following drivers without a clear slowing signal and increase crash risk; Newell dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The brake light switch on the 2023-2024 Newell P50 motor coach is supposed to sense brake pedal movement and tell the rear brake lights to turn on. Those lights tell traffic behind the coach that it is slowing or stopping. The system depends on the switch wiring sending that signal as soon as the driver applies the brakes.

On affected coaches, an added brake switch for the push-button start system was wired incorrectly during assembly. That wiring bypasses the original brake switch. As a result, the brake lights do not illuminate properly unless the brake pedal is fully depressed, so drivers behind the coach are not shown the braking signal during lighter braking.

There is no warning sign before failure. The driver does not get a dash warning or other clear notice that the brake lights are not lighting when the coach slows.

Who's affected?

Both model years use the same Hella taillight switch.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific motorhome is included.

What's the safety risk?

Failed brake lights make the coach harder for other drivers to see and can leave them without a clear signal that you are slowing, increasing the risk of a crash. There is no warning sign for the operator before the lights fail. Schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Newell dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2023-2024 Newell P50 is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Newell dealer to schedule the free brake-switch rewiring that restores brake-light operation before the pedal is fully depressed.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Newell mailed one. If not, reference recall number 23V147 when you call.
  4. Call Newell customer service at 1-888-363-9355 with questions about scheduling or repair timing.
  5. Drive cautiously until the repair is complete. Leave extra following distance and signal early so drivers behind the coach have more time to react.

What happens at the repair

At the Newell Coach service center, a Newell technician rewires the brake switch so the brake lights illuminate when the pedal is pressed. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. Newell says owners can use the Newell Coach service center in Oklahoma, or Newell will help locate a more convenient service center and cover the remedy cost there. If you already paid a service center out of pocket for this brake switch repair, Newell Coach will reimburse the cost of the remedy. Owners who service their own coach can request Newell's repair instructions.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 23V147?

Recall 23V147 covers 28 2023-2024 Newell P50 motor coaches with brake lights that do not illuminate until the brake pedal is fully depressed. That condition can make the coach less visible to other drivers while slowing. Newell will rewire the brake switch for free.

What should I do if my 2023-2024 Newell P50 is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific coach is included in recall 23V147. If it is, contact Newell customer service at 1-888-363-9355 or a Newell service location to schedule the brake-switch rewiring. Owner letters were mailed March 14, 2023, and the repair is free.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and Newell's remedy states that the brake-switch rewiring is free of charge. The free repair applies even if the coach changed owners after the recall notice was mailed.

What is the safety risk for this Newell P50 recall?

The risk is that other drivers do not get a clear brake-light signal when the coach slows. Reduced visibility or missing brake-light warning increases crash risk. If your VIN is included, arrange the free brake-switch rewiring with Newell.
