What's wrong?
The single ABS modulator valve on the affected 2017-2023 Western Star 49X, 47X, 114SD, and Cascadia trucks is a quick-release air brake valve on the front axle. It meters air pressure during normal braking and during stability-control events, when Electronic Stability Control or Roll Stability Control applies braking to help keep the truck pointed where the driver intends.
On affected trucks, the front brake modulator valve corrodes. Corrosion contamination inside the valve interferes with how air pressure is released and applied. During braking started by the stability-control system, that uneven pressure can make the truck pull toward the affected side instead of braking evenly.
The warning sign is an ABS malfunction light before the valve is fully contaminated by corrosion. If that light appears, treat it as a brake-system warning and have the truck checked before relying on the stability-control system in a hard braking or roll-control event.
Who's affected?
Covers four truck lines across the 2017-2023 model years, all tied to the same single ABS modulator valve.
