What's wrong?
The Romeo Power traction battery in the 2021-2022 Lightning Emotors FE4 stores high voltage electricity for the electric drive system. During normal driving, its internal controls close high voltage contactors, which are heavy duty switches that let battery power reach the propulsion system. That power is what moves the vehicle and lets it start.
In the recalled FE4 vehicles, multiple faults inside the 30.6 kWh Romeo Power battery pack can trigger those contactors to open. The faults involve flood sensing, the high voltage interlock loop, cell balance, and low temperature sensing. When the contactors open, the battery protects itself from internal damage, but traction power is no longer available. The vehicle can fail to start or lose propulsion while driving.
Owners can see a steady or flashing malfunction indicator lamp, a wrench light, or a sudden drop in displayed state of charge and remaining range. The vehicle can also fail to operate below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or fail to operate at any temperature.
Who's affected?
The included FE4 model years use the same Romeo Power high-voltage traction battery.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific vehicle.
What's the safety risk?
Sudden loss of traction power while driving increases the risk of a crash because the FE4 can lose propulsion in traffic. Watch for a malfunction indicator lamp, a wrench light, a sudden range drop, or failure to operate. If any of these appear, pull over when safe and call the dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised Lightning Emotors dealer once available.

What happens at the repair
Lightning Emotors is preparing the dealer repair for this recall. Once the remedy is available, a Lightning Emotors technician will replace the high voltage battery, and the final dealer repair will be free. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. Battery repairs already paid out of pocket are handled through the manufacturer's limited warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program. Ask the service desk how that warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
