What's wrong?
The front axle brake modulator valve on these 2017-2023 Freightliner Cascadia, Business Class M2, 114SD, 49X, 47X, and 57X trucks is a quick release air valve in the brake system. It helps control air pressure at the front axle brakes, including when Adaptive Cruise Control, or ACC, commands braking without the driver pressing the pedal.
On affected trucks, certain painted front axle modulator valves have a plastic enclosure and aluminum body that let corrosion form inside the valve. As contamination builds, the valve can stop releasing or applying air evenly on the front axle. During an ACC braking event, that uneven brake control can make the truck pull toward the affected side.
The warning sign named in the recall is an ABS light before the valve becomes fully contaminated. An ABS light means the antilock brake system has detected a brake control fault, so the truck needs dealer attention before the condition worsens.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific truck is included.
What's the safety risk?
During ACC braking, contaminated front brake modulator valves can make the brakes pull to one side, causing a sudden direction change and increasing crash risk. An ABS light is the listed warning sign before complete valve contamination. If the truck pulls during ACC braking or shows an ABS light, schedule service soon and drive cautiously until inspected. Repair is free at any franchised Freightliner dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2017-2023 Freightliner or Western Star truck is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Freightliner dealer to schedule the free front brake modulator valve inspection, replacement, and software update that addresses brake pull during ACC braking.
- Bring the recall notice if DTNA mailed one, and reference recall number 22V817 when you call.
- Tell the dealer if your truck was repaired under recall 20V-390, because DTNA says those trucks need the new remedy.
- Drive with extra space until the repair is complete, especially when using Adaptive Cruise Control braking.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Freightliner technician inspects the front brake modulator valves and replaces them if the inspection shows replacement is needed. Some vehicles also receive a software update that alerts the driver when a front brake modulator valve needs replacement. Parts and labor are covered under the recall, including vehicles that were repaired under the earlier brake modulator valve recall and need the new remedy. If you already paid for a covered repair before the reimbursement cutoff in the owner notice, request a refund through an authorized dealer with your repair documentation.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 22V817?
Recall 22V817 covers 219,390 2017-2023 Freightliner Cascadia, Business Class M2, 114SD, 49X, 47X, and 57X vehicles. The front brake modulator valves can corrode and make the vehicle pull to one side during an Adaptive Cruise Control braking event, increasing crash risk.
What should I do if my 2017-2023 Freightliner Cascadia, Business Class M2, 49X, 114SD, 47X, or 57X is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 22V817. If it is, contact a franchised Freightliner dealer to schedule the inspection, valve replacement if needed, and software update if required. Reference recall number 22V817 or FL-958 when you call.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to correct the defect at no cost, and Freightliner says dealers will inspect and replace the front brake modulator valves as needed for free. Covered vehicles also receive the required software update for free.
What is the safety risk?
The safety risk is a sudden pull to one side during an Adaptive Cruise Control braking event. That change in direction can increase the risk of a crash. If the vehicle pulls during braking, stop using Adaptive Cruise Control and contact a Freightliner dealer for recall guidance.
What if my vehicle was fixed under recall 20V-390?
It still needs the new remedy for recall 22V817. Freightliner says this recall expands and replaces previous recall 20V-390, and all vehicles repaired under 20V-390 need the new remedy performed. Check your VIN and reference FL-958 when scheduling service.
