Recall 22V793 covers 15,674 2022-2023 Volvo S60, S90, V60, XC60, XC90 vehicles with ECM software that can cut drive power. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.
Volvo is recalling 15,674 2022-2023 S60, S90, XC90, XC60, and V60 vehicles because an ECM software error can keep the combustion engine from starting and lead to loss of drive power. The depleted high-voltage battery condition increases crash risk, and the Volvo dealer repair is free.

What's wrong?
The electronic control module, or ECM, is the computer that coordinates engine operation in the 2022-2023 Volvo S60, S90, XC90, XC60, and V60 plug-in hybrid vehicles. It reads sensor data and commands the combustion engine, electric drive system, and cooling circuits so the gas engine and electric motor work together without overheating.
On affected longer-range plug-in hybrids, the ECM software handles the electric drive cooling circuit incorrectly when maximum cooling is requested. The estimated cooling flow value is set to zero, and that software logic can keep the combustion engine from starting when the vehicle needs it. If the high-voltage battery runs down after that, the vehicle loses electric propulsion as well.
Owners are given warning signs. The driver display can show "Propulsion System Service Required" at start, then a turtle symbol with reduced speed when the gas engine is needed. If those warnings are ignored, the display tells the driver to stop safely before electric propulsion is lost.
Who's affected?
The included S60, S90, XC90, XC60, and V60 configurations share the same engine control module concern across the 2022 and 2023 model years.

What's the safety risk?
Affected Volvo vehicles can lose drive power as the high voltage battery depletes, increasing crash risk. Treat a "Propulsion System Service Required," turtle icon, speed limit, or "stop safely" message as a warning to pull over where safe and call the dealer before continuing. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2022-2023 Volvo S60, S90, XC90, XC60, or V60 is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Volvo dealer to schedule the free ECM software update that fixes the engine-control error tied to drive-power loss.
- Bring the recall notice if you have it, and reference recall number 22V793 when you call.
- Drive with extra caution until the software update is complete; a loss of drive power increases crash risk.
- Call Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552 with questions and reference Volvo recall R10198.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Volvo technician updates the electronic control module software so the control system no longer blocks engine starting in the recalled condition. The recall repair is free, and parts and labor are covered. Volvo has a general reimbursement plan on file for owners who already paid out of pocket for a related software or no-start repair before the recall work was done. Bring repair paperwork to the service desk, or ask Volvo Customer Care how to submit documentation for review.
