What's wrong?
The DT85 base boom on 2015-2022 Altec Aerial Device units is the main boom structure that supports the equipment while it is raised, lowered, and positioned. The auger stow bracket is attached to that boom and holds the auger when the auger is being stowed or unstowed. The weld at that attachment has to keep the bracket tight against the boom under repeated movement and load.
On affected units, the weld between the base boom and the auger stow bracket develops cracks because stresses at that weld are higher than intended. The crack occurs where vertical plates are welded to the base boom. As the crack grows, the bracket no longer has the solid attachment it was designed to have.
An annual inspection with the covers removed should identify the weld crack. An operator can also notice the bracket flexing during stowing or unstowing of the auger. There is no other warning sign before the bracket weld is near failure.
