What's wrong?
The Dometic two-burner LPG cooktop in affected 2021-2022 Airstream Basecamp, Interstate, Interstate Nineteen, Bambi, and Atlas units uses burner control valves to start, stop, and regulate propane flow to each burner. When a knob is turned, the valve meters gas through a sealed metal surface so the burner gets fuel only when the cooktop is in use.
In NHTSA campaign 22V595, the defect is in those burner control valves. Dometic reported that the mating metal sealing surfaces inside or outside the valve were abraded, which means the surfaces that are supposed to seal smoothly were scratched or worn. When that seal is damaged, propane escapes past the valve and creates a gas leak.
The warning sign is the smell of gas while the cooktop is being used. If you smell gas, stop using the cooktop, turn off the propane supply if you can do so safely, and contact an Airstream dealer for the free recall repair.
