What's wrong?

The Sheppard Master Steering Gear on 2021-2022 Ferrara Igniter, Cinder, and Inferno fire trucks is the main gear box in the steering system. It translates the driver's steering-wheel input into force that turns the front wheels. Inside that gear, recirculating balls help the worm shaft move smoothly and carry steering load without binding.

On the affected trucks, the steering gear was assembled without the required number of recirculating balls. That assembly error came from the ball-insertion operation, and later rework and inspection steps did not catch the missing balls. With the gear built that way, the worm shaft is not supported as designed and the steering gear can fracture.

Before the internal fracture, the driver can feel the steering become strained or harder than normal. There is no audible or visual warning sign before failure, so the steering feel is the key thing an operator is able to notice.

Who's affected?

Igniter, Cinder, and Inferno are included across the 2021 and 2022 model years, all involving the same steering system.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific truck is included.

What's the safety risk?

A fractured steering gear can cause loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash. Before an internal fracture, the steering can feel strained, with no sound or warning light. If steering effort changes, stop using the vehicle and arrange service. Repair is free at any franchised Ferrara dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2021-2022 Ferrara Igniter, Cinder, or Inferno fire truck is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Ferrara dealer to schedule the free steering-gear inspection and replacement that fixes the fracture risk.
  3. Bring the owner letter if Ferrara mailed one. If not, reference recall number 22V570 when you call.
  4. Keep the truck out of regular service until the steering repair is complete if the dealer cannot inspect it right away.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Ferrara technician inspects the steering gear and replaces it when the inspection shows it is covered by the recall. Parts and labor are covered under the recall, so the dealer repair is free. Ferrara has a reimbursement plan on file for owners who already paid for this steering gear repair before the recall notice. If that applies to you, contact Ferrara customer service with your repair paperwork and ask how to submit documentation.
