Recall 22V560 affects 257,998 2012-2013 Kia Optima vehicles for unsecured headliner plates. Repair is free at any franchised Kia dealer.

Kia is recalling 257,998 2012-2013 Optima sedans because the right and left headliner plates were not secured properly. If a side curtain air bag deploys in a crash, a loose plate can detach and strike an occupant, increasing injury risk; Kia dealers will secure the plates free of charge.

What's wrong?

The headliner in 2012-2013 Kia Optima vehicles is the fabric-covered panel across the inside of the roof. Behind it are right and left headliner plates, which help hold trim pieces in place around the roof and pillar area. The side curtain air bag deploys from this area during certain side impacts, so the nearby trim has to stay attached as the air bag opens.

On affected Optimas, Kia found that the adhesive on the headliner plates was potentially insufficient. That means the plates were not secured as firmly as designed. If a side curtain air bag deploys, the force of deployment can cause a loose plate to detach instead of staying fixed to the headliner.

There is no warning sign before failure. The headliner can look and feel normal in daily driving, because the problem shows up when the side curtain air bag deploys.

Who's affected?

The scope is limited to the headliner assembly in the roof and pillar area.

What's the safety risk?

During a crash, an unsecured headliner plate can detach and strike an occupant. That increases the risk of injury. There is no warning sign before this happens, so confirm your VIN and schedule the repair soon if included. Repair is free at any franchised Kia dealer.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Kia technician secures the right and left headliner plates so they stay in place if the side curtain air bag deploys. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. Kia's general reimbursement plan covers documented repair expenses already paid before the recall notice. If you've already paid for this headliner plate repair, bring receipts or repair paperwork to the Kia service desk and ask how to submit the claim under that plan.
