What's wrong?
The headliner in 2012-2013 Kia Optima vehicles is the fabric-covered panel across the inside of the roof. Behind it are right and left headliner plates, which help hold trim pieces in place around the roof and pillar area. The side curtain air bag deploys from this area during certain side impacts, so the nearby trim has to stay attached as the air bag opens.
On affected Optimas, Kia found that the adhesive on the headliner plates was potentially insufficient. That means the plates were not secured as firmly as designed.
