What's wrong?
The steering gear on affected 2022-2023 Kenworth trucks is the gearbox between the steering wheel and the front steering linkage. As the driver turns the wheel, the gear multiplies that input into the force needed to move the front wheels. Inside the gear, small recirculating balls roll through channels so the shaft moves smoothly under load.
The problem starts with steering gears that were reworked before installation. During that rework, recirculating balls were removed and the replacement process was not completed, leaving the gear with fewer balls than required. That missing internal support puts extra stress on the gear shaft, and the shaft can fracture. Once that happens, steering response is reduced or lost.
Before the internal fracture, the driver can feel the steering become strained or unusually heavy. There is no audible warning, no dashboard light, and no visual warning tied to this defect.

What's the safety risk?
A fractured steering gear can cause loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash. Before the fracture, the steering can feel strained, but there is no warning light or sound tied to this defect. If steering feels strained, stop using the truck and call the dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Kenworth dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2022-2023 Kenworth or Peterbilt truck is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Kenworth or Peterbilt dealer to schedule the free steering-gear inspection and steering-gear replacement if the inspection shows the gear was assembled incorrectly.
- Bring the recall notice if PACCAR has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 22V547 when you call.
- Ask the dealer to note PACCAR recall numbers 22KWE or 22PBE on the repair order for the correct truck brand.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete. A fractured steering gear can cause loss of steering control.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Kenworth technician checks the steering gear serial numbers and replaces any steering gear covered by the recall when the inspection shows it is needed. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. PACCAR used its general reimbursement plan on file, so documented steering gear repairs paid before the owner letter can be reviewed under that plan. Bring prior repair paperwork to the service desk and ask how PACCAR handles the claim for this recall.
