What's wrong?
The steering gear on 2021-2022 Capacity Tj 5000, Tj 6500, and Tj 9000 trucks is the gearbox that turns steering-wheel input into movement at the front wheels. Inside the M100 gear, small recirculating balls help the worm shaft move smoothly and carry steering load. The gear depends on the correct ball count to spread that load across the mechanism.
In the affected steering gears, an assembly operation left fewer recirculating balls than required. Later rework and inspection steps did not catch the missing balls before the gears were installed. With the load concentrated on too few balls, the worm shaft can fracture inside the gear, which can reduce steering assistance or control.
Before an internal fracture, the driver can feel the steering become strained or harder than normal. There is no audible warning and no dashboard light before the failure.
