What's wrong?

The steering wheel retainer bolt on the 2022 Ford F-59 and F-53 holds the steering wheel tight to the steering column. When the bolt is tightened to specification, it keeps the wheel fixed on the column so steering input transfers cleanly from the driver's hands to the steering gear.

On these stripped chassis vehicles, the bolt was tightened to 17 Nm instead of the specified 47.5 Nm. That leaves the joint under-clamped. As the wheel is turned during normal use, the loose bolt can back out of the joint and let the steering wheel loosen or detach from the column. The bolt design itself did not change; Ford's repair uses a new bolt with thread adhesive and tightens it to the correct specification.

Before failure, the driver can hear a ticking or clicking noise from the steering column when turning the wheel. The steering wheel can also show slight movement as the bolt loosens.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Ford technician replaces and tightens the steering wheel attachment bolt so the wheel stays secured to the steering column. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. Ford reported that by August 10, 2022, all 692 included vehicles had been remedied, and no owner letters were mailed. Reimbursement is not offered for this campaign because Ford expected the affected chassis to be repaired by Ford or final stage manufacturers before delivery.
