What's wrong?
The hydrogen sensor on the 2019-2021 Hyundai Nexo watches for hydrogen gas concentration in the fuel cell delivery system. That system stores and routes hydrogen to the fuel cell, where the vehicle turns it into electric power. The sensor's job is to recognize a leak so the vehicle can respond when hydrogen is present in the delivery system.
On affected Nexo vehicles, the catalyst inside the sensor was made with platinum particles that were too small. Silicon can collect on that catalyst surface and form a film. Once that film is present, the sensor loses detection ability and can fail to recognize hydrogen gas in the delivery system. The replacement sensors use catalysts with properly sized platinum particles.
There is no warning sign before failure. A driver can have a sensor that is not detecting hydrogen correctly without a separate light, sound, smell, or drivability change pointing to the sensor itself.
Who's affected?
The same hydrogen sensor appears under both the electric propulsion system and fuel system across the 2019-2021 model years.

At the dealer, a Hyundai technician replaces the hydrogen gas detection sensors that monitor the hydrogen gas delivery system for leaks. The recall repair is available now, and parts and labor are free. Until that work is complete, keep the vehicle parked outside and away from structures. Hyundai's reimbursement plan covers prior related repairs paid before the recall notice. Bring repair invoices, receipts, and any matching service paperwork to the dealer or contact Hyundai customer service to start the claim.
