What's wrong?
The trunk latch assembly on the 2019-2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, G70, and Sonata holds the trunk lid closed and releases it when the outside handle, key, or inside emergency lever is used. Inside that latch is a pawl, a small locking piece that moves out of the way so the latch opens. The emergency release depends on that pawl moving correctly.
On affected vehicles, the pawl material does not handle high ambient heat well. Heat-related contraction and stress can damage the pawl, so it no longer disengages cleanly from the latched position. When that happens, the trunk does not open as designed, including from the inside emergency release.
