Recall 22V193 covers 391,836 2021-2022 Ford and Lincoln vehicles for an integrated trailer brake software error. Repair is free at any franchised Ford dealer.
Ford is recalling 391,836 2021-2022 F-150, Maverick, Expedition, Navigator, F-250 Sd, F-350 Sd, F-450 Sd, and F-550 Sd vehicles because a software error can stop a towed trailer's electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes from working. Loss of trailer braking can lengthen stopping distance and raise crash risk; Ford dealers will complete the free repair.

What's wrong?
The integrated trailer brake controller on the 2021-2022 Expedition, Navigator, F-150, F-250 Sd, Maverick, F-350 Sd, F-450 Sd, and F-550 Sd manages brake commands for a trailer with electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes. When you press the tow vehicle's brake pedal, the controller is supposed to send an output signal so the trailer brakes apply with the truck or SUV.
On affected vehicles, Ford traced the problem to a software error inside that controller. The error can prevent the trailer brake output signal from being sent when the tow vehicle's brakes are applied. The tow vehicle still brakes, but the trailer brakes do not apply as commanded.
There is no warning sign before failure. A driver towing a trailer with this brake setup can press the brake pedal and get no separate braking help from the trailer.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included.
What's the safety risk?
Loss of trailer brake function lengthens stopping distance and increases the risk of a crash, especially while towing. There is no warning sign before the trailer brake function is lost, so schedule the software update soon if your VIN is included. Repair is free at any franchised Ford dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2021-2022 Ford Expedition, Navigator, F-150, F-250 Sd, Maverick, F-350 Sd, F-450 Sd, or F-550 Sd is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Ford dealer to schedule the free integrated trailer brake control software update that fixes the trailer brake loss issue.
- Bring the owner letter if you have it, and reference recall number 22V193 and Ford recall 22S17 when you call.
- Avoid towing until the software update is complete. If towing is necessary before repair, leave extra stopping distance.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Ford technician updates the integrated trailer brake control module software so the truck or SUV can send the correct braking command to a trailer with electric or electric over hydraulic brakes. The software update and labor are free under the recall. Ford is not offering a separate reimbursement program because the original warranty program provides a free repair for this concern. If you already paid for related service, ask the Ford service desk how warranty coverage applies to that paperwork.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 22V193?
Recall 22V193 covers 391,836 2021-2022 Ford and Lincoln vehicles with integrated trailer brake control software that can prevent a towed trailer's electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes from working. Ford dealers update the trailer brake control module software for free.
What should I do if my 2021-2022 Ford F-150, Maverick, Expedition, Navigator, F-250 Sd, F-350 Sd, F-450 Sd, or F-550 Sd is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 22V193. If it is, contact a franchised dealer to schedule the integrated trailer brake control module software update. Reference recall 22V193 or Ford recall number 22S17 when you call.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects at no cost, and Ford says dealers will update the integrated trailer brake control module software free of charge. Parts and labor are covered for vehicles included in recall 22V193.
What is the safety risk with recall 22V193?
The safety risk is longer stopping distance while towing. If the trailer's electric or electric-over-hydraulic brake system does not brake, the tow vehicle has more braking work to do, increasing crash risk. Confirm your VIN before towing and schedule the free software update if your vehicle is included.
When were owners notified about recall 22V193?
Ford mailed owner notification letters on April 22, 2022. A used vehicle or address change can keep a notice from reaching the current owner, so the VIN check is still the best way to confirm whether this recall applies to your vehicle.
