What's wrong?

The 1500W Purkeys inverter system on 2018-2023 International Lt trucks draws battery power so equipment in the cab can use household-style electrical power. Its positive battery cable carries current from the truck's batteries to the inverter. That cable has to stay clipped in the correct path and away from metal edges under the driver-side skirt.

On recalled trucks, the inverter cables were not routed to International's routing and clipping standards. The positive cable can rub against the side skirt frame, scraping through its outer covering. Once the cable is damaged, the exposed conductor can short to the frame near the driver-side floor area, above the DEF tank and outside the frame rail.

The warning sign is chafing on the inverter battery cable, but it is hidden behind the driver-side skirt. A driver will not see it during a normal walkaround. The skirt has to be removed to inspect the cable path and look for damage.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific truck is included.

What's the safety risk?

A damaged battery cable can short and increase the risk of a fire. The chafing is behind the driver side skirt, so owners are unlikely to spot it during a normal walkaround. Schedule the recall repair soon, and let the dealer inspect the cable and brackets. Repair is free at any franchised International dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2018-2023 International Lt is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised International dealer to schedule the free repair.
  3. Schedule replacement of any damaged battery cables and installation of new inverter cable brackets and saddles so the positive battery cable no longer chafes on the side skirt frame.
  4. Bring the recall notice if International mailed one. If not, reference recall number 22V164 when you call.
  5. Drive only as needed until the repair is complete, since a damaged battery cable can short and increase fire risk.

What happens at the repair

The recall repair is available now at an International dealer. An International technician replaces any damaged battery cables, then installs new inverter cable brackets and saddles so the positive battery cable is held away from the side skirt frame. The replacement parts and labor are free under the recall. If you've already paid for a related battery cable or inverter cable routing repair before the recall notice, Navistar's reimbursement plan covers documented pre-notification repairs. Keep prior repair paperwork and follow the reimbursement instructions included with the customer notification.
