What's wrong?
The torque rod bolt on a 2022 Great Dane Champion or Everest trailer secures the suspension radius rod, also called a torque rod, in its mount. That rod helps hold the axle in the correct position under the trailer as the suspension moves and as the trailer brakes, turns, and carries load. The bolt has to be tightened to the correct torque so the joint stays clamped.
On affected Champion Dry Van and Everest Refrigerated trailers, the radius rods were installed after the suspension supplier shipped the suspension to Great Dane, and the mounting bolts were not properly torqued. A loose bolt can back out of the mount and fall out. If that happens, the radius rod no longer holds the axle in place, and Great Dane reviewed a field claim where an axle shifted rearward after a radius rod bolt came loose.
There is no warning sign before failure. The filing says this can happen without warning, so an owner or fleet operator should not count on noise, vibration, or visible movement before the bolt lets go.

What's the safety risk?
Loose or missing suspension bolts can let the suspension shift rearward, which can cause a loss of vehicle control. If bolts fall off, they can also become a road hazard and increase crash risk. There is no warning sign before failure, so ask the dealer when the inspection is open. Repair will be free at any franchised Great Dane dealer once available.
